The Sandpipers’ College Scholarship Program funds qualified recipients throughout four continuous years of their undergraduate studies. In recent years, we have achieved an astounding graduation rate of 98%, suggesting that Sandpipers invests our scholarship money wisely.
For the 2021-2022 academic year, Sandpipers awarded more than $316,550 to 51 students (freshman – senior). High school seniors living in the South Bay (both citizens and eligible non-citizens as defined by the U.S. Department of Education) are eligible to apply for a Sandpipers Scholarship.
Each summer Sandpipers funds, organizes, and teaches a nine-week arts program available for free to eager South Bay children, 4-14 years of age. The kids create their own artwork, while parents are grateful for the safe, positive activity for their children, away from the influence of local gangs.
Approximately 15-20 Sandpipers, along with family and friends, work to complete a project in one day. These projects could include cleaning a beach, painting or refurbishing a building, or planning a party for underprivileged children.
As part of the Los Angeles Team Mentoring After School Enrichment Program for at-risk youth, Sandpipers hosts a TeamWorks beach party for approximately 75 eighth grade students who work hard throughout the year to earn this reward. The event’s activities include lunch, surf lessons, and other beach fun. For many of these teens, this is their first trip to the beach!
We host Richstone family center at Dockweiler Beach with a turnout of almost 20 families. The day includes beach entertainers who helped facilitate fun activities for the kids. These activities included tug of war, relay racing, water balloons and more. The day continues with lunch and an ice cream stand. Lots of sandpiper volunteers come out to help make a great day for the families and enjoy a day at the beach.
Volunteers spend time enjoying holiday music and crafts with the residents at Lomita Manor. Holiday Sing is an annual Sandpipers holiday tradition. We join together to do some holiday caroling and great holiday crafts and make the holidays a little brighter for the low-income senior residents at Lomita Manor.
